Kagoshima Triad Program Symposium 2020


On February 11, the Kagoshima Triad Program Symposium 2020 was conducted by students in room 101 of the Common Agricultural and Veterinary Medicine Building. It was attended by 49 undergraduate and graduate school students and 11 faculty members.

Our university is currently using Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) to facilitate the “US-Kagoshima-Asia Triad Program in Multi-Polar World” program supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Kagoshima University. Eight U.S. universities, and eight Asian universities are conducting shared classes and student exchange in this project. This symposium was planned by the students participating in the project (*Details of the program).

The students can choose and participate one of the eight specialized courses “Rural & Island Healthcare Course”, “Environmental Architecture Design Course”, “Nanoscience and Biotechnology Course”, etc. They participate in online (COIL) collaborative research as well as visiting their partner universities.

In the first part, students from each course made presentations based on their study abroad experience. They presented highly specialized content in English as well as reporting their exchange with students from each partner school and their local activities, and they shared it with each participants.

In second part, a special lecture on food safety from the perspective of a veterinarian was given by Dr. Chi-Chung Chou from the National Chung Hsing University (Taiwan), one of our partner universities.

In the third part, the student participants took part in a panel discussion on the theme “For a Better Student Life.” Students described the differences between students in Japan and those in other countries and gave their impressions based on what they experienced, as well as expressing their ideas on how to make the most of this experience in the future.

A questionnaire was conducted on the students who participated in the symposium after the event. Based on the questionnaire, we reviewed the preparation period and program content to make further improvements of the symposium in the future.
